New Canon LP-E6P battery breathes new life into the R5C

Canon released a new firmware update for the hybrid photo/cinema R5C mirrorless camera body. It further unlocks 59.94P 8K RAW LT functionality while using the new high output line of LP-E6P batteries. Free yourself from needing the extra weight of a PD power bank or a v-mount battery. Although you may still favor those for longer filming sessions. This new options give you the option to use one (or two with the batter grip) battery to power in the factory compartment. We've waited a while for this moment so it feels pretty liberating if you ask me. I personally, wasn't ever sure it would become an option until a potential Canon R5C mk2 release. So, I'm pleasantly pleased with this being a new option. Not only will you be able to have a lighter rig when using these features, you will have an additional 50% run time potentially!

Here are some things to consider. But first the link to download the latest firmware. Remember, to follow the instructions as written to avoid any painful pitfalls that may occur by ignoring Canon's precautions. It is very straight forward and easy to do if this is your first time upgrading your firmware, so don't be afraid to do it.

You may be asking yourself, "What is the difference between these and the LP-E6 or LP-E6NH batteries I recently purchased?"

  • High-amperage, rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack for dependable power supply
  • Specifically designed for seamless compatibility with Canon LC-E6 and LC-E6E battery chargers

You may be asking yourself, "What is the difference between these and the LP-E6 or LP-E6NH batteries I recently purchased?" The difference is the new LP-E6P have a higher voltage 8.4V vs 7.4V  whereas the mAh rating is very close to the same. The higher voltage makes these able to handle the power needs of your R5C camera and also give you longer run times. You can expect to see up to a 50% increase in runtime depending on your settings. These are also backwards compatible with other Canon camera models (R6, R5, R5 II) which take the LP-E6 batteries and give you longer run times as well. You may need to update your firmware prior to using them.

THE GOOD NEWS

  • You can now utilize 8K RAW LT video recording options without the need of additional power sources.
  • Longer capture and standby times versus the previous LP-E6 and LP-E6NH batteries.
  • You can potentially pack less batteries with you depending on your project needs.
  • You can still use your current LC-E6 battery charger for your LP-E6P batteries

THE BAD NEWS

  • You may now feel the need to buy a stack of LP-E6P batteries. However, if you do not have a need for those higher resolution recording options, you are not obligated to do so. So save your money for a nice steak dinner!
  • If you happen to be new to capturing 8K RAW you will need to purchase more storage and potentially a more capable computer.

CHARGING SOLUTIONS

You may be wondering if you need a new charger for these higher output batteries. The short answer is no.

However, Smallrig has released a nice charger for those of us that have several of these batteries on hand. If you are tired of charging one or two at a time this is awesome charger for you. The great thing about this charger is, not only will it charge 4 LP-E6P batteries, it will charge them all at once. This occurs only if you use it with a 60W or better power block. It unfortunately does not come with one, only a USB-C to USB-C cord. If you do not use it with a 60W or better charging block, have no fear. It will still work, you will just not get fast charging and it will only charge one battery at a time. I highly recommend the use of a 60W charging block as it will save you a lot of time in the long run. Plus you can also use the block as a back up for many other devices you probably already own such as your smart phone, tablet or DJI Ronin RS3 Pro.

If you want to save some money versus the oem Canon battery. There is one 3rd party alternative I have found so far. Im sure many others will follow in time. I have no yet tested any of these so use at your own risk. I do like the idea of the power meter and a usb c port to charge right on the battery. If I end up picking up a pair I will update you on them here.
